Ignition Interlock. An ignition interlock device is a mechanism installed in your vehicle. Before starting your vehicle, you breathe into the interlock, and it measures the concentration of alcohol in your breath. If the concentration of alcohol in your breath is over a prohibited limit, the vehicle will not start.
When Ignition Interlock Is Required. If a person is convicted of a second (or more) OVI DUI offense within six years, a judge must order ignition interlock as a condition of limited driving privileges. A judge may also order ignition interlock as a condition of limited driving privileges for a first OVI DUI conviction and as a condition of limited driving privileges on an Administrative License Suspension.
Fees. If you are ordered to have an ignition interlock device, you will be required to pay an installation fee and a periodic rental fee.
Violations. Violations of ignition interlock orders include operating a vehicle without the ignition interlock, circumventing or tampering with the ignition interlock, or having a prohibited concentration of alcohol in your breath, as measured by the ignition interlock device. If a judge determines there has been a violation of an ignition interlock order, the judge may order the use of a Secure Remote Alcohol Monitoring device. For information on that device, see the page of this website describing SCRAM.
