Limited Driving Privileges. If your license is placed under an Administrative License Suspension (A.L.S.), or if your license is suspended for an OVI/DUI conviction, you may be granted limited driving privileges. The law regarding limited driving privileges is complex; your eligibility for privileges, and the waiting period to apply for privileges, depends on the number of prior refusals of chemical tests and the number of prior convictions for O.V.I. For some details on these issues, see the pages of this website on Administrative License Suspension and DUI Penalties. There may also be a requirement that you obtain Yellow License Plates.

Purposes For Privileges. Ohio law provides that limited driving privileges are available for the following purposes: occupation, vocation, education, medical, license examination, and court-ordered treatment. No other driving is permitted.

Identification. If you are granted limited driving privileges, you do not receive a plastic driver’s license. Instead, you are given a judgment entry, issued by the Court, which specifies when and where you may drive. You must keep the judgment entry with you whenever you drive. If you need a form of identification, you may use a passport or apply for a temporary state identification card.

Driving Under Suspension. If you are granted limited driving privileges and you are caught driving outside the scope of those privileges, you may be prosecuted for Driving Under Suspension, an offense that can involve a mandatory jail sentence.
